If you are in the process of relocating this summer, and you need to put your furniture into storage for a short period of time, use the tips below to help keep your furniture safe and secure while you store during your relocation process.

Clean Your Furniture

Before you put your furniture into a storage unit during your relocation process, you need to clean your furniture. For cloth furniture, take a vacuum to it so you can remove all the microscopic dust that builds up on it over time. For plastic furniture, use a cloth and some soapy water to wipe down the furniture and clean it off. For wood furniture, clean the wood and use the appropriate wood polish on it before you get ready to move it.

Break It Down

If your furniture can be broken down into smaller units, do that before you store it. Breaking it down into smaller units can make your furniture easier to manage and store. For example, if your dinning room table can be broken down, remove the screws so each part is separated.

However, make sure that you put all screws and small parts into a labeled ziplock bag. You don't want to lose the small parts that hold everything together. You may also want to tape that bag to one of the large pieces of furniture in the set that the parts came off of.

Protect It

If you have any furniture that is especially valuable to you, make sure that you protect it. Wrap furniture pads or soft blankets around the furniture to protect it and keep it from becoming damaged during the moving and storage process.

It is also a good idea to put padding around any sharp edges, such as the corner of a bookshelf or a table. That way, they will not get dinged, damaged or scratched up in the moving and storage process, and neither will you while handling those items.

Use Original Boxes

For furniture such as kitchen appliances and all forms of electronics, try to store those items in the original boxes if you still have them. If you don't have them anymore, store them in boxes that closely match the size of the item, and fill the space around these more fragile items with towels, clothes or packing materials so they do not move around. You should also mark this type of furniture with a big X so that anyone who handles it knows that it is fragile and exercises additional caution.
